Beyond the Mix Book Club

  • The Small City Bookshop 201 Church Road Bristol, England, BS5 9HL United Kingdom (map)

Our book club is starting on Tuesday 3rd October and will run on the 1st Tuesday of every month (apart from January). It will be hosted by Tyesha Nicholson at The Small City Bookshop in Redfield. These events are for Mixed Heritage women, trans or non-binary folk only.

Books are an amazing way to connect to our history. They allow us to experience the lives of others in situations we may recognise and show us characters who respond to their racial identity in complex and sincere ways. Each month we will choose a book that delves into mixed identity, from novels to memoirs and nonfiction, whatever the group feels like next! Conversations around race can often be framed in black and white, so the books we will choose from explore mixedness as a spectrum. It will be a very relaxed, open discussion, using the book’s themes to think about our own stories. Spoilers will be avoided, so if you haven’t had time to read it all, don’t worry!

The first book we will read is The Mixed Heritage Experience by Naomi and Natalie Evans from Everyday Racism. Copies are available at local libraries, or if you need support with purchasing a copy, please email hello@beyondthemix.org.
