About Beyond the Mix

Beyond the Mix is a space for mixed heritage women to connect and share.

Founded by two mixed heritage sisters, Laura and Sarah Lewis-Paul, the aim of Beyond the Mix is to build a community where mixed heritage women can explore their identity, attend classes and events together while feeling safe and supported.

Beyond the Mix is all about empowering our community members to explore their identities, share their stories and make connections. We achieve this by offering a diverse range of courses, workshops, and events across five categories: Movement, Family, Identity, Business, and Fun.

Beyond the Mix is open to all mixed ethnic groups and welcomes women from the queer, non binary and trans community.  We aim to create a non judgemental environment for people to be open, feel understood and connect.  One of our key aims is to empower and uplift women from our community and beyond to give them confidence and opportunity to showcase their projects and ideas.

Background

Beyond the Mix was born in response to the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement, ignited by the symbolic removal of Edward Colston's statue in Bristol. During this period, discussions about diverse family backgrounds and reactions to current events gained momentum. We recognised the need for a dedicated space where mixed heritage individuals could openly discuss unique challenges that might not be as prevalent in families with a single ethnic background.

Engaging with Our Wider Community

We have a deep appreciation for Bristol's vibrant diversity and are committed to forging strong relationships within our local community. Beyond the Mix has two key objectives when it comes to the spaces, individuals, and organisations we collaborate with:

Supporting Diversity: We actively support businesses and individuals owned by people of colour and those championing diverse communities in Bristol.

Creating Inclusive Spaces: We collaborate with white-owned companies open to diversifying their clientele and fostering more inclusive environments.
