Our next Book Club is starting on Monday 13th May and will run on the 2nd Monday of every month. It will be hosted by Tyesha Nicholson at Este Kitchen, Greenbank, Bristol.

Tea, coffee and cake will be available to buy at the cafe.

Books are an amazing way to connect to our history. They allow us to experience the lives of others in situations we may recognise and show us characters who respond to their racial identity in complex and sincere ways. Each month we will choose a book that delves into mixed identity, from novels to memoirs and nonfiction, whatever the group feels like next! Conversations around race can often be framed in black and white, so the books we will choose from explore mixedness as a spectrum. It will be a very relaxed, open discussion, using the book’s themes to think about our own stories. Spoilers will be avoided, so if you haven’t had time to read it all, don’t worry!

The first book we will read is ‘You Exist Too Much’ by Zaina Arafat. Copies are available at local libraries, or if you need support with purchasing a copy, please email hello@beyondthemix.org.

Dates:

Time: 6.30-8.30pm

Venue: Este Kitchen

What you will need:

Come as you are! You are encouraged to dress to feel good, in a colour relating to the current season but most importantly, to be comfortable as we will be mostly sitting. Bring a pen and a notebook to journal in.

A yoga mat to sit on if you have one.

You are welcome to bring an object that is special to you to place on the altar, in the centre of the circle.

A bit about Sally:
"My personal practice, work and life are animated by creativity. It inspires me to continuously grow and discover. I love to gather and absorb many sources of inspiration. My approach to facilitation and inquiry is informed by many diverse yet connected roots including somatic inquiry, storytelling and the yoga tradition.
The practices I explore change with the cycles and seasons. I like to draw upon both what is beautiful and what is challenging using a variety of techniques, approaches and adventures.
Paramount to my work is delighting in our commonality yet understanding that each of us are different".
