Torrie #mixedmonday

Our next #mixedmonday is writer, and speaker Torrie Sorge @mixed.ology.

As a Mixed Race woman, Torrie understands the beauty and complexity of our divine diversity firsthand. It’s propelled her to become a truth-teller, bridge-builder, and cheerleader who passionately encourages others to stop hiding and start loving their God-given blend. She loves partnering with individuals, interracial families, ministry groups, and church leaders, providing practical tools with Biblical truths as they become bridges of reconciliation and hope within their circles of influence.

How would you describe your ethnicity?

I describe myself as Mixed. My mom is White (Scottish / German). My dad was Afro-Puerto Rican / Indigenous Taino. He passed away in 2017.

Has your mixed-ness influenced your career in any way?

I never would have thought I'd say "yes" to this question, but God had different plans. I spent 30 years hiding my mix, trying to assimilate into the dominant White culture. In 2020 my eyes began to open to the masks I'd been wearing and I made a decision to fully embrace my mix. It wasn't easy, but I'm thankful I did. Now I use my voice to encourage and educate others about the Mixed experience through my writing and speaking.

If you could describe your mixed identity in one word, what would it be?

Purposeful - I didn't understand for a very long time. But now I believe that my mix - your mix - is divinely on purpose. God has a plan and purpose for each of us and I believe our mix is part of that plan.

What is the best thing about being mixed heritage?

Because I'm Mixed, I've had the unique opportunity (as have most mixed people) to learn to become a cameleon, blending into the culture and environment I'm currently in. I've learned to understand and relate to various points of view. Now I use that to help build a bridge. When you have lived experience among a group, you gain a level of credibility all the books and classes can't provide. With that credibility and trust, I hope to continue bringing unity where once there was division...in homes, families, classrooms, boardrooms, churches, and even in our own heart.
