Sheen #mixedmonday
This week's #mixedmonday is the lovely Sheen @sheenyb.
Hi I’m Sheen (Shireen by birth) I’m 33 years old and I live in Bristol with my husband Kyron & my 2 daughters. I grew up in Southmead but opted to bring my girls up on the other side of Bristol ❤️
I work within the NHS and have done for the last decade. I have always worked within the healthcare sector and get great satisfaction from helping others and making a difference.
How would you describe your ethnicity?
I would describe myself as mixed race. My mum is Spanish and Nigerian. My dad is white British. My mum never really liked to answer questions I had growing up when I asked about our heritage. Although now after conversations with other family members, I have managed to really find out who I am.
Has your mixed-ness influenced your career in any way?
I would say I have faced challenges which I confidently feel I would not of had I of not been a woman of colour. I've enjoyed breaking the stereotypes many people I have met and worked along side have had.
If you could describe your mixed identity in one word, what would it be?
Spice
What is the best thing about being mixed heritage?
I always found being mixed different to how I embrace it now due to my upbringing with racism. That feeling of not belonging unless I was around my mums family in London who are predominantly black, because being around my dad’s family was so tough at times. When genes and traits came into play my older sister presented much lighter than me too so that came with much confusion.
My heritage now gives flare that real zest of light. After really finding my roots & embracing my culture I now get to guide my daughters confidently knowing I have the tools to support them through life with greatness.
