Sally #mixedmonday
This weeks #mixedmonday is a special one, @sally.balfourth. Sally has been part of the Beyond the Mix community from day one. She facilitated our very first event 'Yoga with Sally' and they have continued every month for over 2 years. We love her classes and her gentle and calming presence is so beautiful to witness.
Sally loves being part of the Beyond the Mix community! She currently balances artistic outlets and projects with studying to become a midwife. She is drawn to creative explorations and the changing cultural landscape valuing the silly alongside the sincere.
Sally shares embodied practices that support people to feel into their own investigations with their bodies (and beyond).
How would you describe your ethnicity?
I’ve tried on so many terms over the years! At the moment, simply ‘mixed’. My heritage is Dutch, Irish, Jamaican. Though I don’t have any British blood, with all four of my grandparents arriving in East London in the 1960s, I’d put London in the mix too.
Has your heritage influenced your career in any way?
I’m a student midwife. Particularly as a mixed woman, learning about the disparities faced by marginalised populations in maternal outcomes has been an enormous incentive for me to want to be part of this work and conversation.
What’s the best thing about being of mixed heritage?
The lifelong identity crisis that once felt like a curse is starting to feel like a blessing. There is so much beauty and insight in inhabiting multiple and simultaneous identities.
If you could define your mixed identity in one word, what would it be?
Fluid.
