Safe Spaces
Can a space ever be truly safe?
We can connect through the experience of having multiple heritages but we all bring our own personal life experiences to the spaces we share.
When we started Beyond the Mix we wanted to create a space that was safe for mixed heritage women, trans and non binary folk to share experiences and connect in a non judgemental environment. What we did not give enough consideration to were all of the numerous life experiences that each individual would bring to the space. While we believe that our spaces are welcoming and there is certainly a sense of ease and comfort there, the space can never be truly safe for everyone.
We have decided to remove the word ‘safe’ from our material but we have lots of other wonderful words to help describe what we want to achieve. These words are taken from feedback from the various events we have run so far:
Respectful
Uniquely special
Interesting
Open
Kind
Empowering
Calm
Comfortable
Welcoming
Have you been to a Beyond the Mix event yet? What are your thoughts on safe spaces?
